It is that season again! The season that requires a bulk hot chocolate mix!

When the days get cooler and the woodstove is pumping, all I want is some hot chocolate. My kids feel the same way.
Wait, that’s not entirely true. They’d rather a mug full of mini marshmallows with a little bit of hot chocolate to go with it. 🙂
Anyways, regardless of how you drink your hot chocolate, it’s definitely the season for it. Right now I am watching the snow fall and thinking about how a mug of that chocolately goodness would be perfect right now.
But it’s not even lunch time yet, and I try to wait to have my sugar overload until AFTER lunch. Because, let’s be honest, hot chocolate is best paired with a delicious baked good. Like a big chocolate chip cookie. Or some chocolate cake. Or how about a cinnamon bun? Yes, a soft, fresh, warm cinnamon bun. And maybe toss some candy canes in the mugs of hot cocoa to enjoy. Because, why not make your hot chocolate experience the best that it could be?
I prefer to make my hot chocolate dry mix in bulk. Every year I make a big batch and it lasts us through the season. Of course, if you are one of those families that drink it every day you may need to make it a few times throughout the season, but nonetheless, it will last you a little while.
What’s also great about making your own hot cocoa mix in bulk at home is that you know what is in it, instead of a long list of ingredients you can’t pronounce and aren’t sure what they are.

I don’t have any pictures or step by step instructions for you today, because basically, you just mix all the ingredients into a big container or you can mix them together in a large bowl before you put them in an airtight container for storage. It’s pretty simple.
The simple ingredients you’ll need as you will see in the recipe below are unsweetened cocoa powder, nonfat dry milk powder, powdered icing sugar, and white sugar.
If you find it isn’t sweet enough or is too sweet, just adjust the amount of sugar to your personal preference. I find this recipe not overly sweet, but just sweet enough for my out of control sweet tooth.
I like to make my hot chocolate with water, and then top it off with some milk or coffee creamer. Not the flavored coffee creamer though. I find the flavored coffee creamer just too sweet for hot chocolate since the mix already has sugar in it.
If you need multiple cups of hot cocoa in the day, no judgment here, by the way.

Bulk Hot Chocolate Mix
Ingredients
- 8 cups powdered skim milk
- 3 cups unsweetened cocoa
- 3 cups powdered icing sugar
- 1 cup white sugar
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients in a big bowl. Transfer to an airtight container.
- To make a mug of hot chocolate, stir 2 heaping tbsp of the mix into a mug of hot water or milk. Enjoy!
